The Eagle of Lagash is the emblem of the 32 and 33 (and highest) degrees of Scottish Rite Freemasonry. The two-headed Eagle is called Eagle of Lagash because it's one of the oldest uses as an emblem, in the ancient Sumerian city of Lagash. There are various meanings of the double-headed eagle. In fact, the eagle is a symbol of the magic process undertaken by the Masonic initiate also called a completed alchemical process. In the Hermetic Alchemical doctrine, the two-headed eagle is a sign of Scorpio, and a sign of the transformation - the lowly rebirth of the scorpion into the soaring creature of air, the ascending of the spirit. It is also an alchemic symbol of purified sulfur. Sometimes we can see swords under The Eagle of Lagash. Their meaning is the heavenly fire and the crown of spiritual attainment.
The Scottish Rite is one of the two branches of Freemasonry in which a Master Mason may proceed after he has completed the three degrees of Symbolic or Blue Lodge Masonry. The Scottish Rite includes the degrees from the 4 to the 32. The other branch is known as the York Rite, consisting of Royal Arch Masons, Royal and Select Masters, and Knights Templar.
The Scottish Rite Freemasonry is an extension of the first three degrees of Craft Freemasonry. Here the member witnesses degrees from the 4 through the 32. Each degree provides a moral lesson that can help the member be a better person.
The Scottish Rite 14th degree motto: The Fourteenth Degree Motto - Virtus Junxit, Mors Non Separabit which means “Virtue has united and death shall not separate”. The rings circle expresses the fraternal bond between Masons of all generations.
